2010年は国連の提唱する国際生物多様年にあたり、また愛知県名古屋市において生物多様性条約の第10回 締約国会議(COP10)が開催される年でもあります。COP10では世界の生物多様性と生態系を保全、管理、再生していくための長期的戦略が話し合われ ることになっています。この国際シンポジウムでは、そうした長期的戦略を考えるための前提となる、環境変動に対する生態系の回復力や、生態系のもつさまざ まな恵み（生態系サービス）をどう評価し、自然と調和した持続可能な社会の構築にどう結びつけていくかについて、この分野の第一線でご活躍の方々に講演を いただきます。また、パネル討論では、日本の里地里山に見られるような伝統的に維持されてきた人間・自然関係を再評価し、現代の持続可能な社会システムと して再構築する方策など、具体的な生物多様性・生態系保全のあり方を多面的に検討します。

Not only is 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity, it is also the year that the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. COP 10 participants will discuss long-term strategies for conserving, managing, and regenerating the worlds biodiversity and ecosystems. At this international symposium, participants will explore ways to link the building of a sustainable society in harmony with nature with the scientific assessment of ecosystem services. These links will serve as the foundation for structuring long-term strategies. In particular, there will be a multi-faceted exploration of how to assess and rebuild traditionally human nature relationships into modern sustainable social systems.
